![]() I feel like Hendrix, you know what I’m saying? I feel like Prince or the Jackson 5 back when they were slamming with a band. What do you like about having a live band behind you? A lot of hip-hop groups don’t do that. We’re still trying to build the show to this day, adding laser lights, video screens … we try to make it as theatrical as possible. There are so many songs we can choose from.Īnd we’ve got a live band, as well, a full eight-piece band, so we can play around with a lot of different stuff onstage. With a catalog like ours, we have four or five different ones that we fluctuate and switch off on, and of course the major hits, “Crossroads,” “1st of tha Month,” “Thuggish, Ruggish Bone,” we do those. So what is a Bone Thugs-N-Harmony live show like? Bone Thugs will perform Friday night at The Firmament in Greenville, and we spoke with Flesh-n-Bone recently about the band’s longevity, their live show, and the modern music business. Twenty-five years down the line, Bone Thugs have continued to be one of the most durable franchises in hip-hop, selling out shows and spinning off side projects (like last year’s Bizzy and Krayzie Bone duo album, “New Waves”) while working both independently and with major labels. On the strength of massive hits like “The Crossroads,” “1st of tha Month,” “Thuggish, Ruggish Bone,” and more, the group sold a staggering 50 million albums worldwide, and continued racking up gold and platinum plaques well into the 2000s, long after many of their contemporaries had faded away. They combined lightning-fast rap flow with flawless vocal harmonies, joining the best of old-school R&B singing, endlessly catchy pop hooks, and streetwise hip-hop swagger into one irresistible package. In 2020, the group changed their name to Boneless Thugs-N-Harmony as part of a marketing campaign led by the international restaurant chain Buffalo Wild Wings. When they first emerged from Cleveland in the early 1990s, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony (a quintet featuring Bizzy Bone, Wish Bone, Layzie Bone, Krayzie Bone, and Flesh-n-Bone) carried with them a dazzling synthesis of sounds. So we’re gonna bring it together to do what we do - which is music - and reach the masses. We brothers, cousins and best friends - we have ups and downs and whatever, but at the end of the day we’re still family. The group kicked Bizzy Bone out after a couple of years of issues, but took him back five years later. Flesh-N-Bone served eight years in prison for assault. Over the next fifteen years, the group scored six more top 40 hits including the platinum-selling “I Tried” (featuring Akon), but it was a tumultuous time. An updated version of “Crossroad” from the album, renamed as “Tha Crossroads”, became a Grammy-winning international smash hit, holding the #1 spot in the US for eight weeks and reaching the top 20 in eight countries overseas including the UK. 1999 Eternal followed featuring another top 40 hit “1st of Tha Month”. Their debut EP Creepin On Ah Come Up included two hits, “ Thuggish Ruggish Bone” (#22) and “Foe Tha Love of $” (#41). Rapper Eazy-E of the group N.W.A signed the group to Ruthless Records in 1994. Then Flesh-N-Bone, Layzie’s brother, joined the group, and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony was solidified. Under this name, they released the 1993 album, Faces of Death. Enterpri$e, consisting of Bizzy Bone, Krayzie Bone, Layzie Bone, and Wish Bone. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony is a hip-hop group from Cleveland, Ohio, formed in 1991 under the brief name Band Aid Boys.
